A few sketches from the holidays. It was great to spend some time with the family. Maybe they are not so happy since I have spent countless hours either drawing them or taking pics or videos. I call it multidisciplinary family portrait but they call it annoying...The cityscapes are from Basel, Switzerland. A city well worth visiting! There are more than thirty museums. I specially enjoyed the exhibition of 'How to Love' at the Cartoon museum. Featuring works by the Actus Group Rutu Modan, ,Yirmi Pinkus, David Polonsky and Ari Folman. Some truly beautiful originals on display. I just got back from my trips and I will be scanning the sketchbooks from the US soon. Unos bocetos de las vacaciones. Ha estado muy bien disfrutar de unos días en familia. Para ellos tal vez haya sido una tortura con tanto dibujo, foto o video. Yo lo llamo retrato multidisciplinar de familia, ellos a mi pesado...La ciudad de los dibujos es Basilea en Suiza. Visita obligada con sus más de treinta museos. Me gustó especialmente la exposición 'How to Love' de dibujos de Actus Group (Rutu Modan, Yirmi Pinkus, David Polonsky y Ari Folman). Day 3, 4, 5 and then some

So those days went by definitely too fast. I had the best time in Boston before parting to New York, that is why I had to return after a few weeks there. I like Boston with all its offerings but it is the great people who live here that make it so great. I can't thank you enough Rusha & Daniel, Karla, Monique & Andrew, Stona and specially Sandy. You guys are the best made me want to move here!

I am posting some sketches from the first days in NY from the more relaxed ball point pen sketches done while enjoying a coffee or having lunch to the fast paced callygraphy marker sketches done in the subway. In these last sketches I focused on capturing a sense of the way dress in NY.
So far in this trip in NY I have been in different apartments throughout Brooklyn, first in Greenpoint, then Bushwick in the edge with Ridgewood and finally in Clinton Hill right next to Pratt Institute and the experience has been great so far.
I booked rooms through AirBnB and it turned out to be a fantastic way to meet people and feel like home while being away.

El tiempo ha pasado volando en los últimos días de Boston y las dos primeras semanas de Nueva York. Tan rápido que he tenido que volver a Boston. Siempre me gustó esta ciudad y todo lo que tiene que ofrecer pero es la gente que vive aquí lo que la convierte en algo tan especial. No sé cómo daros las gracias Rusha & Daniel, Karla, Monique & Andrew, Stona y especialmente Sandy. Soís los mejores y me dan ganas de venirme a vivir aquí.

Subo algunos de los primeros bocetos de NY, he pasado de los dibujos hechos con bolígrafo tomando un café o después de comer en algún sitio, a los dibujos rápidos del metro para los que he usado rotuladores caligráficos. En estos últimos he tratado de captar la manera de vestir de la gente de NY.
De momento en este viaje a NY he pasado por varias zonas de Brooklyn, primero Greenpoint, después Bushwick en el borde con Ridgewood para terminar en Clinton Hill junto al instituto Pratt y de momento la experiencia ha sido genial.
Es la primera vez que reservo habitaciones a través de AirBnB y la verdad es que no podría haber funcionado mejor. Es una manera de conocer gente y sentirte un poco como en casa cuando estás fuera.

I never had so much fun in Boston before. Thanks to Sandy, Monique, Stona for treating me so well. There are lots of people to meet with yet, very excited about it.
I was in New England Comics yesterday and saw the striking covers that David Aja made for 'Red Skull incarnate' for Marvel, and also the covers I did for 'Drums' for Image. I had not seen all the issues together. I love seeing the final outcome of my work and can't wait to see 'Secret Avengers 18' out on the 23rd this month.

Nunca me lo había pasado tan bien en Boston antes. En gran parte gracias a Sandy, Monique y Stona por tratarme tan bien. Todavía tengo que reunirme con más mucha más gente.
Ayer pasé por New England comics y puede ver las espectaculares portadas que David Aja hizo para 'Red Skull incarnate' de Marvel y las portadas que yo hice para 'Drums' de Image. Me encanta ver el resultado final del trabajo y tengo ganas de ver el número 18 de 'Secret Avengers' que sale el día 23 de este mes.

Security in Paris Airport was amazing, I had to put my backpack four times through the x-ray machine, taking more things out every time.
Long but short flight from Paris to Boston, as I spent most of it getting sleep back on the plane as usual. I got some nice company and conversation with Melinda and Bob.
I greatly enjoyed flying with 'Air France' all in all. Just the right tune.
Once in Boston after the long immigration lines, a kind officer opened my suitcase and greatly enjoyed my drawings. Too bad I did not have a picture book for his kid. Next time maybe.
I had forgotten how shaky Boston buses were, but the T has not changed a bit. Enjoy the shaky lines!

La seguridad en el aeropuerto de París es bastante increíble. Tuve que pasar mi mochila cuatro veces por la máquina sacando más y más cosas cada vez.
El vuelo París Boston aunque largo se hizo corto entre recuperar el tiempo perdido y la conversación con Melinda y Bob. Disfrute de 'Air France'.
En Boston después de las colas interminables de inmigración, un encargado de aduanas muy amable reviso mi maleta y le gustaron mucho mis dibujos. Que pena que no llevara encima ningún álbum ilustrado para su hijo.. Quizás la próxima vez.
Se me había olvidado lo dificil que es dibujar con el traqueteo de Los auto buses de Boston. Disfrutad de las líneas "bailongas"

Took a little two day vacation with my closest family in France. Travelling from different spots we got together near Geneva where my sister and Dominik picked me up. A lot of nature, history and walking around for such a short period of time. Loved the time with my family. I also managed to get some time for a few sketches from life so spirits are very high up!
Expect lots of these now that I am going to NYC...

Aquí estoy de vuelta después de dos días de vacaciones con mi familia más cercana en Francia. Nos reunimos cerca de Ginebra dónde mi hermana y Dominik me recogieron en el aeropuerto. Mucha naturaleza, historia y paseos para tan poco tiempo. Es bueno disfrutar de momentos así con la familia. Y como también he podido hacer bocetillos del natural vengo con las pilas cargadas!
Ahora que voy a Nueva York espero hacer muchos más de estos...

This an old quick painting I did a few years ago on a workshop with Antonio López. I have done some sporadic painting since then, but mostly working from photographs. I think is about time to start making life portraits again. That muted dialog between model and painter is pretty intense and it can help develop your style and visual vocabulary.I am in deep need of some quality experimentation time...

Este es un apunte del natural que hice en un taller con Antonio López hace algunos años. Desde entonces sólo he pintado de manera esporádica pero casi siempre partiendo de fotografías.Creo que va siendo hora de volver a pintar retratos del natural. El díalogo silencioso que se establece entre modelo y pintor en el proceso normalmente es muy intenso y puede ayudar a desarrollar tu estilo y tu vocabulario gráfico. Me hace falta un poco de experimentación...

The end of the world

It would be hard to explain, but I have always had a thing for dwelling in the dark passages, the mysterious and the strange. And lately I have been pretty lucky about that. Long gone are the juvenile romantic novels I illustrated when I was starting...
The first is the cover for the Spanish edition of Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich for Siruela Editorial. I love drawing and painting landscapes and it is rarely that working on Editorial you get to do a pure landscape piece so when I saw the chance of doing it here I jumped at it without thinking. The novel deals with tradition and heritage through the voices of a family of Native American from North Dakota.

No sé explicar lo que es pero siempre he tenido una fijación por representar los momentos oscuros, el misterio y lo extraño. Últimamente he tenido mucha suerte al respecto. Lejos quedan las primeras novelas de amor juvenil que ilustré cuando empezaba...
La primera es la portada de la edición española de Filtro de amor de Louise Erdrich para Siruela. Me encanta dibujar y pintar paisajes y es algo que rara vez puedo desarrollar en mi trabajo editorial de manera tan directa así que cuando se presentó la oportunidad me lancé de cabeza. La novela retrata varias generaciones de una misma familia descendientes de la tribu de los Chippewa de Dakota del Norte.

I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do so I only presented sketches with variations on the same theme. Although I had a back up sketch just in case. I might actually take it to the final when I get some free time.

Tenía la idea muy clara sobre el tipo de paisaje y en mis bocetos delimité el terreno lo más posible, aunque por si acaso preparé una opción alternativa. Algún día con tiempo espero terminarla también.

I wanted the piece to be moody so I emphasized that in the sketch, my sketches are usually less developed, altough for covers I aim for a very clear reading of what type of cover it will be even with rough art.

The piece is a combination of ink, liquid pencil (such a pity I 'ran out' since is pretty fantastic) and digital.

Quería hacer una imagen con mucha atmósfera y traté de acercarme lo más posible en el boceto. Normalmente soy mucho más suelto en mis bocetos, mientras se entienda la escena o la acción, la composición y el tipo de ilustración que voy a hacer me vale.
En esta imagen utilicé tinta, grafito líquido (una pena que ya no me 'quede', porque es maravilloso) y digital.

This second piece was a full page spread for an article on School Library Journal about today's dystopian novels. Only thing I can say about this is that I had a total blast doing it.

Esta segunda ilustración es la imagen de apertura de un artículo sobre las novelas de distopías actuales para School Library Journal. Me lo pasé muy bien con esta imagen.

This is the kind of sketches I scare AD with these days. A simple outlay of the composition and some hints on color, but that is basically it. I picture them with a terrified look on their faces as they open my emails...

So I am looking forward to more of these in the future, but now back to making comics and books.
Look for Secret Avengers from Marvel in October written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by David Aja and myself. It is awesome because they are awesome.

Estos son los bocetos con los que suelo asustar a los directores de arte. Composición y a veces indicaciones de color. Me imagino las caras de espanto al abrir el correo...
Espero repetir este tipo de trabajos pronto, pero de momento a seguir con los cómics y los libros.
En octubre saldrá el Secret Avengers en el que estoy trabajando junto a David Aja con guión de Warren Ellis. Es una gozada por que estos tipos son unos locos geniales!

London on the fast lane

Another quick update documenting and even shorter stay in London. Brief but great in every possible way. The date was significant in my life and it could not be any other way but memory stirring.
These are all small sketches while on the go, Gatwick Airport train station, the train to London and several buses and subways.

By the way, if you haven't tried VSD you should, its pretty sweet. Just don't drive while under its effects...

Otra entrada rápida para rememorar un viaje más breve incluso si cabe a Londres. Corto pero intenso en todos los sentidos.
La fecha era significativa para mi y y como no podía se de otra manera removió memorias ocultas.
Estos son todos bocetos pequeños hechos de camino a un sitio o a otro, del la estación de trenes del aeropuerto de Gatwick, el tren a Londres y varios autobuses y metros de la ciudad.

El primero es una imagen de Javier Zabala, portada del libro Bartleby el escribiente de Herman Melville, el segundo es un boceto que hice uno de los días que me colé en su taller en la Feria del Libro de Guadalajara. En sus talleres se habla de ilustración, de interpretación del texto y de expresión personal, todo con muy buen ambiente. Si quieres experimentar y atreverte a probar otras maneras de contar, te recomiendo que vayas a uno de los cursos de Zabala.

Aquí podeís ver la información de el próximo que realiza en Madrid. Es una buena excusa para conocer el Museo del Dibujo y la Ilustración ABC en Madrid. Hay que apuntarse ya!

Por si os interesa o conocéis a alguien que pudiera estar interesado, os mando la información de un curso que organiza el Museo del Dibujo y la Ilustración ABC en Madrid.

Rafael de Penagos, probablemente el ilustrador gráfico más importante en España en la primera mitad del s.XX, nos servirá de excusa para buscar nuestras propias posibilidades gráficas, narrativas y técnicas en un taller de ilustración de tres intensos días. Tendremos además la oportunidad de navegar por los inmensos fondos del Museo ABC, donde duermen 200.000 ilustraciones de los maestros españoles del s.XX, y de hacer una exposición en el propio museo con los trabajos que realicemos durante el curso.

Tres días en Madrid para compartir nuestra pasión, la ilustración.

The first image is the cover Javier Zabala did for Bartleby by Melville, the second is a sketch I did in the day I sneaked into one of his classes at Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico last year. In his workshops there is always a nice atmosphere to talk about illustration, the interpretation of a text and personal expression. If you are looking forward to experiment and depart from what you usually do, I highly recommend you attend one of his workshops.

CBA May, go figure...

These are some of the sketches from life at CBA in Madrid from last Friday. As usual the models were great.

I feel like I was too concentrated on visualizing and understanding anatomy and lost a bit of the refreshing and therapeutical quality these drawings have for me. Maybe it is better to leave that exercise for longer poses. I don't care so much for realism but for an expressive representation of form and function. They should be alive in the paper.

If you don't know all the many things they offer and you are in the city take a look. Hopefully I will see you there!

Estos son algunos de los bocetos del viernes pasado en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid.

Como siempre los modelos estuvieron increíbles.

Yo estuve demasiado concentrado en entender los músculos en acción y el ejercicio perdió un poco de la frescura y la cualidad terapéutica que supone para mí. Es probable que sea más fácil hacer ese tipo de estudio para poses más largas.

El realismo no es la meta de estos estudios sino una representación de la forma y función que resulte expresiva. Los dibujos deberían vivir y respirar en el papel.

Face to face

In between laying out the roughs for the next projects I felt like practicing drawing from movies like in the old days. Its a great way to get a better idea of expressions, likenesses and lighting. Faces are mysterious to me, how two people can look alike just by sharing the same way of smiling or some other subtlety.

He hecho un descanso en la planificación de los próximos proyectos y me he puesto a dibujar congelando la imagen de una película como hacia en los viejos tiempos. Es una buena manera de entender las expresiones, los parecidos y las luces. El rostro es un misterio que me atrapa, como dos personas pueden parecerse simplemente por la manera en que sonrien o algún otro gesto sutil.

I went out to sketch with Tesi today and did a couple of drawings I like in this spot of town that I really like. I guess I am not the only one since the local kids gather around to break dance there lately. I don't mean kids for nothing, there was a two year old fascinated by them, he got real closed followed by his dad and he started replicating their moves. The kids were pretty nice and danced just for the little boy. It was quite a scene and it made us all smile.

Esta tarde estuve dibujando con Tesi en el Pasaje Gutierrez, uno de mis sitios preferidos de Valladolid. Y no soy el único al que le gusta, últimamente se acercan muchos chavales a practicar break dance. Lo mejor de todo ha sido cuando un niño de dos años seguido de su padre se ha puesto en primera línea a observar fascinado todos los movimientos y poco a poco se ha puesto a imitarlos. A los chavales les ha hecho gracia y ha bailado sólo para el niño. Ellos hacía un paso y el niño replicaba. Creo que la escena nos ha hecho reir a todos.

The Wrestler

I have recently worked with Christine Bower-Wright on this really fun project, The Wrestler for Hemispheres magazine. The article written by Kevin Gray deals with the current scandals overshadowing sumo wrestling and turning to an unlikely savior, Baruto, a big genial Estonian to restore this 2,000 year-old sport to glory.

One of the things I loved about this project is that I got to develop a couple of comic strips for it. Considering my love for comics as a kid played a big part in my decision to become an illustrator approaching the sequential art has always been a blast for me.

We wanted a simple image for the opener that referenced poster art could strike the viewer. Sumo wrestlers are massive so playing with the scale was a natural approach. We had to take into account as well Baruto's personality and actually portray him accurately. So in the end a big close up hit all the spots.

I suggested some designs to make the opener illustration go over the whole spread and played a bit with the type.

Note how amazing the art directors I work with are that they allow me to do these simple sketches, that is nothing else but a great ability on their part to see further from a loose drawing. And I do love them very much for that.

There were originally two comic strips but we only ended using the first one. Here is the process for both and the end result for the first one. I moved the fight scene from the second strip to the first one once it got killed.

Warming up

With so many travels these days I barely find time to make nice posts with scanned sketches. This is a warm up piece from today. I never learned how to use watercolor properly even though an old friend gave me some good lessons. Thanks Jenny, I am sorry I did not pay more attention.
So whenever I feel in a dead end, I just know I can go over with other media. In this case I used nupastel. And I gave it a photoshop last touch to clean up.
Hopefully I can go back to posting sketches regularly soon.

After Mexico

The trip to Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico was great, we had a lot of fun hanging out with old and new friends alike. Now its time to go back to the studio and bring some movement to the blog with pictures from Guadalajara, some process work and more sketches so don't go too far. It is coming really soon.

Interviú is a Spanish magazine with ample views. They always like to see more.
I lllustrated one of the short stories by Lorenzo Silva. A dark piece of genre violence with a twist.
Since it was fiction they gave me a lot of freedom which is always nice. I created the opener spread and three spots.

A few quick sketches pasted together. I had prepared another round of this but the light went off and some company owes me $20,000 for the crappy collage I could not save. Too bad the extra power supply did not work but I am glad it failed on me doing this instead of actually working on a big work in progress file. Yes, the kind of files that make your computer hate you even if you got him extra ram for Christmas this year.

I had my old website with Netfirms and it used to work fine, it was built by the awesome Tom at paperscissorsandglue.com/ but these days it just won't let me update no more without reseting the whole thing. So I called it quit and got a less confusing domain raulallen.com
The new site there is temporary while we work on a new version but it is easy to update and actually works, at least for me. So if you are so kind let me know if it does for you.

Travel sketch

I like to travel a lot and while I don't sketch as much on the journeys as I used to do I still manage to get a few drawings done. Planes, cars and trains are the places where I sleep best...
These are from the plane to Barcelona and the subway there done last month for the comic convention. There was a guy who started yelling I had no right to draw anybody on the train, specially the woman in front of him. Then he kept on going about cosmic justice . The woman could not care less if I was drawing her but everybody there felt there was actually justice in the world when he got out of the train in the next stop.
Like I said, I like to travel a lot.

Me gusta mucho viajar y aunque últimamente no abocete tanto en los trayectos como solía hacerlo todavía consigo sacar algún que otro dibujo. Aviones, coches, trenes son los sitios donde mejor concilio el sueño...
Estos los hice en el vuelo a Barcelona y en el metro allí cuando fui el mes pasado al salón de cómic. En el metro un hombre enmpezó a gritarme que no tenía derecho a dibujar a nadie en el tren y menos aún a la mujer que estaba sentada delante de él. Después continuo hablando sobre la justicia infinita. A la mujer le resultó igual que le dibujara pero todos los pasajeros del vagón sintieron un poquito de esa justicia en cuanto este hombre se bajó en la siguiente parada.
Como he dicho, me gusta mucho viajar.

Seems like I am not showing much work these days. I wish I could but long projects are always like this. So instead of getting into trouble I am throwing in some sketches. From a little place in Chinatown in NY and the last one from Made Symposium in Berlin.

Parece que últimamente no enseño mucho de mitrabajo. Ojalá pudiera pero los proyectos largos tienen esas desventajas. Así que en vez de meterme en problemas subo unos pocos bocetos. Todos están hechos en un pequeño restaurante de Chinatown en NY menos el último que está hecho en Berlín durante el Made Symposium.

We had an amazing time and wish we could still be there. Met some awesome people and enjoyed the city were we will be living next...
The Made Symposium was a fantastic but both Raquel and myself feel lucky to have shared a few days with Özlen and Álvaro. They are truly awesome!

De vuelta de Berlín, han sido unos días increíbles, ojalá no hubieramos tenido que volver. He tenido la ocasión de conocer a mucha gente de un talento increíble. Desde luego ya tenemos claro cual es nuestro próximo destino.
El evento de Made fue un lujo pero lo que nos hace sentirnos realmente afortunados es de haber compartido unos días con Özlen y Álvaro. ¡Son unos locos geniales!

Expo en Caja España

Some pictures from the show that belong to El Norte de Castilla taken by Antonio Quintero. You can view some more images in the digital edition of the newspaper. The guy with the blue shirt just happened to be in the show for the free drinks but he ended up talking about the artwork with everyone.

Ferran is a pro and a great guy and made a really nice post of the exhibition on his blog. Maybe I can learn how to do it right from him. You can check it here.

Expo en Valladolid

I have a exhibition of some of my most recent work. Including work for magazines and the latest books. Most of them still awaiting publication. I have the original pencil artwork and a nice printout of the digital result. Also on display a nice little animation that César Fraile put together for me with the coloring process of 'The Rise of Renegade X' cover. Chelsea M. Campbell the author of the book was really awesome and sent me an advanced copy of the book that will be on display along with the rest of the published material I have from recent times. I think it gives an idea of the process from sketch into drawing, coloring and then the printed material.
Here is sneak peek of what will be on display. This is just a contact sheet straight out of Photoshop, not too much time around to be doing a nice collage. The expo will be up from the 23th of February to the 14th of March in Sala Cultural de Caja España, Plaza Madrid 1.

Tengo una exposición de mi obra más reciente. Habrá muestas de ilustraciones para revistas y algunos de los últimos libros en lo que he trabajado. He colocado los originales de lápiz junto a una impresión de la imagen acabada. César Fraile ha hecho una pequeña animación que muestra el proceso de trabajo en la portada de 'The Rise of Renegade X'. La autora del libro, Chelsea M. In the end we had to go for a more classical look and "showing less skin".

It was a fun job, thanks Olga.

Cleaning up my hard drive I stumbled upon some old drawings done in Venice last year. I was there in a workshop with Yuko Shimizu. If you see an ad for it next summer you should go for it. Yuko is great and the atmosphere is amazing.

Viajes por Madrid

Some more travel sketches done while I was in Madrid for the day and had some extra time in Chamartín train station. The last one is and old mall in between Tribunal and Alonso Martínez. It is not one of those beautiful city markets that had become living postcards for tourists but more alike those in an Italian neorealist film. It was inhabited by hard working people, people from the area and some shady characters. From the strong smells to the overall grittyness, this place loomed with everyday weirdness. I have to come back soon.

Algunos apuntes durante mi viaje de un día a Madrid, los primeros son fruto de la espera en Chamartín. El último es un viejo centro comercial entre Tribunal y Alonso Martínez. No es uno de esos mercados antiguos convertidos en atracciones de postal para turistas sino más bien uno de los protagonistas de una película neorealista italiana. Habitado por gente trabajadora, los del barrio y algún que otro personaje inquietante. Desde los fuertes olores a la patina caduca, este lugar está hecho de un tejido extraño y familiar. Tengo que volver pronto.
