Jack is back

I just got my copy of the Spanish edition of Rolling Stone from this month.
It is great to see in print one of the portraits of what I just recently started doing just for fun.
Working as an illustrator is a joy because you get to do what you love everyday and get paid for it. But sometimes it becomes too much like a regular job if you don't allow yourself to play.
Some commissions have a wider range to play than others whether it is a matter of time constraints or heavy art direction. Whatever the case might be it is as easy as creating time for you to make playful pieces. So that is what I did when I started painting on the Ipad, I turn it on and let the fun start.
I have always loved traditional painting and portraits, but having to set up and clean for me becomes a burden when I just want a quick session of painting as a break from actual work. I don't find that problem working digitally and the advantage of the Ipad is I can be literally anywhere.
In combination with a good stylus you can work for hours without your finger falling off. I don't get commissions, but if you like painting on the Ipad, get a Sensu brush. You won't regret it.

My hands are clean

Lately I have been playing more and more with the Ipad painting apps. Specially since I received my sensu brush this week. It is not yet available but make sure you get one when it comes out in May. From the grip of the brush to the lenght and the weight, everything feels right. And the touch on the screen is so soft and yet so sensitive, you won't use anything else once you pick it up.
Also my favorite app Procreate was just updated and it is even more powerful while maintaining the same ease of use and fast performance.
Don't get me wrong, I love sketching and drawing on paper and I still carry around a notebook and pen but painting on the Ipad is really fun. You just get to paint and have fun, no cleaning involved afterwards...
I am doing some quick sketches based on musicians I like, so far Bon Iver, St. Vincent and Grimes.
I tweeted all of them but Grimes is the one I like the best, so here it is. I am not going for likeness I just choose picture I like as a starting point.

Ultimamente me ha dado por jugar más con las aplicaciones de pintura del Ipad. En especial desde que recibí mi sensu brush esta semana. Todavía no está disponible pero me parece muy recomendable y sale en Mayo. El tacto, el peso y la longitud del pincel lo hacen muy cómodo para trabajar con él. Y la sensación del pincel en la pantalla del Ipad no podría ser más suave sin perder nada de sensibilidad.
Los chicos de Procreate han actualizado mi programa favorito y ahora tiene muchas más opciones aunque mantiene la misma simplicidad de manejo y rapidez.
No es que vaya a dejar de dibujar en papel y siempre llevo mi libreta a mano, pero desde luego este tipo de pintura digital dónde sólo hay que pintar y no limpiar es una maravilla.
Estoy haciendo una serie de retratos rápidos basados en músicos que me gustan.   De momento llevo a Bon Iver, St. Vincent y Grimes.

Face to face

In between laying out the roughs for the next projects I felt like practicing drawing from movies like in the old days. Its a great way to get a better idea of expressions, likenesses and lighting. Faces are mysterious to me, how two people can look alike just by sharing the same way of smiling or some other subtlety.


He hecho un descanso en la planificación de los próximos proyectos y me he puesto a dibujar congelando la imagen de una película como hacia en los viejos tiempos. Es una buena manera de entender las expresiones, los parecidos y las luces. El rostro es un misterio que me atrapa, como dos personas pueden parecerse simplemente por la manera en que sonrien o algún otro gesto sutil.

Some more quick ink sketches. I added a couple of figures to that previous sketch just for the sake of it. I have recently completed a couple of books, once they are out I will upload a bit of the process, but for now just sketches.

Otros apuntes de tinta. Le añadí un par de figuras a un boceto previo por divertirme un poco. Acabo de terminar un par de libros, cuando salgan espero subir imágenes del proceso, pero mientras tanto sigo con los bocetos.
